World IP Day was celebrated in Cape Town with a touch of elegance.  Mansoor Parker, Executive partner of law firm ENSAfrica shared his wisdom on impact of tax on sport licensing.  Licensees who use marks, logos or image rights may obtain the right of such use from the licensors in a few different ways. The legal classification of these rights, the nature of the transaction granting the licensee the use of these rights and the geographical location where these rights are used by the licensee determines the tax treatment thereof. Licensees may incur withholding tax obligations and tax filing and reporting obligations. It is important that licensees develop a viable legal and tax compliance strategy in order to avoid non-compliance with South Africa’s tax laws or to avoid their structures being challenged by the South African Revenue Service.

The keynote speaker of the evening was Brian Steinhobel from Steinhobel Design (Pty) Ltd. The prestigious  ART Steinhobel brand, is a global industrial design and product development company, servicing corporate and  individual clients across diverse industries, including electronics, packaging, mining and sports equipment, locally and in Asia, Europe and Americas.

Steinhobel has a proven ability to transform the core performance of products in the marketplace and his projects range from refining and refreshing existing products to the design of entirely new products, where he becomes a central part of the conversation of an innovative idea into an effective product.  His presentation was mesmerizing.
